The Miami-Dade Green Party was born during the 2000 election campaign for Ralph Nader. His candidacy brought countless individuals into political participation that otherwise would have remained marginalized - as many have for decades. These people not only ar testimony to what can happen when a population is galvanized by some leaders with integrity and good sense -- something, unfortunately, our mainstream parties what little part of. Both the participation and the good sense.
Many of the citizens awakend and activated by the Nader campaign, have stayed on to work in theri comunities, many remaining with local Green Parties to help them grow to become ever-brighter beacons of justice, democracy, diversity, grassroots participation sustainable development, and ecological wisdom.
The campaign
Ralph ran in over 42 states, getting nearly 3 million votes in spite of:
- ballot access difficulties
- lack of press coverage
- distorted press coverage (the"spoiler" focus)
- no access to televised debates
- a distorted and corrupt electoral system
- last-minute, nation-wide scare campaign from Gore supporters
All in all, many people discoverd the strange and wonderful sensation of voting for someone you can believe in -- and believe. Green Parties have grown tremendously around the country, and we have begun to get in to office (in over 20 states now!). Yes, there is life after (and with) Ralph.
